On Thursday December 12th, 2025 a master thesis defense was held for the master candidate (Sajjad Abbas Ali) from the department of automated manufacturing and a degree of excellence was awarded for his research finding:
The study was conducted in collaboration with Al- Yarmouk Teaching Hospital, and it aimed to design and manufacture artificial hip joint specified for patients, due to the damage caused by arthritis, injury, or fracture that subsequently needs for hip joint replacement to alleviate pain and restore mobility
The study involved two parts (theoretical and practical) to determine the dimensions of the hip joint for each patients case, based on 3D scanning , 3D printing , and automated manufacturing department programs, the models were taken from a group of patients at the hospital with high precision.
The experimental findings validate the predictive models developed for custom hip implants. The results demonstrate a high correlation (r = 0.91) between femoral head and acetabular diameters, which supports the accuracy of the proposed regression formula for sizing components. The Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models successfully predicted biomechanical metrics such as stress, deformation, and strain with low error rates, including a stress error range of 3.03% to 7.18%. Mechanical testing of the 3D-printed Polylactic Acid (PLA) material showed a tensile strength of 72 MPa and stable deformation under simulated daily activities, with a maximum displacement of 0.580 mm. Additionally, the 3D-printed components achieved a high manufacturing precision with a 99.76% tolerance for femoral head diameter match to the original CAD designs, as verified through laser scanning and deviation analysis.
The study concluded by recommending the importance of integrating research with healthcare sectors (hospitals and healthcare centers), to ensure that research, especially in automated manufacturing field, serves community, meets the need of hospitals, and providing artificial alternatives for patients using advanced technologies in the field of industrial automation.
