On Thursday, September 21, 2023, The Department of Biochemical Engineering at Al-Khwarizmi College of Engineering recently evaluated a master’s thesis by Imad Talib, titled “Removal of Malachite Green Dye from Aqueous Solution Using Activated Carbon Prepared from Ficus Plant, Using Microwave.” The thesis committee, led by Prof. Dr. Raheeq Ismail Ibrahim from the University of Technology, included Prof. Haider Abdul Karim Rashid from the College of Engineering at the University of Baghdad and Prof. Ruaa Ghassan Yousef from the College of Engineering at Al-Khwarizmi, University of Baghdad. The research project was supervised by Professor Dr. Sami Daoud Salman from the Department of Biochemical Engineering at Al-Khwarizmi College of Engineering.
The research explored the use of activated carbon (AC) and its composites, AC-SiO2 and AC-TiO2, to eliminate malachite green dye from water solutions. Exceptional results were achieved, with removal efficiencies of 98.99% for AC, 99.13% for AC-SiO2, and 99.23% for AC-TiO2, correlating with the surface area of the activated carbon materials. The thesis received distinction from the committee, recognizing its significant contributions to biochemical engineering.
