The master thesis of the graduate Webren Rashid Ghadban, a candidate for a master’s degree, was defended on Wednesday morning on February 26, 2025, at Al-Khwarizmi Central Hall and Professor Dr. Osama Fadhil Abdel-latif, college of AL-Khwarizmi, Automated Manufacturing Engineering department, at Baghdad University, was chaired the thesis committee that consisted of professor Dr. Muhammed Abdelsattar Muhammed, Nahren university, Mechanical engineering department, Professor Dr. Mahir Yahya Saloom, Baghdad university, Mechatronics engineering department and supervised by Professor Dr. Faiz Fawzi Mustafa, Al-Khwarizmi college, Mechatronics engineering department at Baghdad university. After the candidate had finished the defense, the chair of the committee announced the degree of (pass with excellence), awarded to the candidate for her research findings which are summarized:<\/span><\/p>\n

This study aims to design and implement a model for an automatic vertical gate irrigation system in dams and canals that suits the hot climate conditions in Iraq using 340 Schneider PLC Modicon M, 420RTX-P position sensor, PID algorithm, two UGT584 ultrasonic sensors, a PH sensor and a DC motor as a drive for the vertical gate. The SCADA system is designed to monitor and control the irrigation process using vijeo designer software. The monitoring system is connected to sensors that collect and monitor parameters such as pH to prevent the negative effect of hydrogen potential on aquatic organisms, two ultrasonic water level sensors to monitor and regulate the water flow before and after the gate depending on the desired target water level entered into the HMI panel in the control room and a potentiometer to automatically set the appropriate position of the gate. It gives commands to the operator using Unity Pro XL software installed on the PLC. Two Nano Bridges are used to transfer data between the vertical irrigation gate area and the central control room area using Modbus TCP\/IP protocol that depends on specific IP addresses. The data transfer rate is 100%. The PID controller is designed using Ziegler-Nichols (ZN) tuning method to accurately manage the DC motor position. Its application in the controller reduces the gate position error from 10% to 2%. The accuracy of the water level sensor implementation is 99.6% with an error rate of only 0.4%. The control system can be designed and implemented in Iraq using an affordable local component to automate irrigation canal water.<\/span><\/p>\n

This thesis included several outputs, including (two research papers published, the first in the French Journal of Automated Systems (journal European des systems Automatises) classified within the third quarter (3Q) in Scopus containers and the second published in the Journal of\u00a0 Engineering at the University of Baghdad)<\/span><\/p>\n

Recommendations:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Identify strategies to reduce energy consumption through the use of solar cells, according to the operational compatibility of the system with the DC power source.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Integrate warning systems into the project to address potential emergencies such as floods, natural disasters, forest fires or crop deterioration<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Different types of valves can be used to precisely adjust both the pressure and volume of water delivered to crops.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Develop disaster response frameworks by integrating systems that facilitate water drainage and fire suppression mechanisms<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. We will examine the security aspect where the acquired data requires protection, thus indicating the requirements for data encryption methodologies<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
