The Al-khwarizmi Engineering College at the University of Baghdad organized a scientific and cultural student debate with the students of the Technological University on Sunday, May 21, 2023, in the Al-Hakim Hall. The event was attended by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, the Deputy Minister of Education for Scientific Research Affairs, Prof. Haider Abdul Zahra, Prof. Muneer Al-Saadi, the President of the University of Baghdad, Prof. Ahmed Al-Ghuban, the President of the Technological University, and the Dean of Al-khwarizmi Engineering College, Prof. Wadood Tahir Mohammed. Also present were several professors, lecturers, and students from both universities, along with the supervisory committee overseeing the competition.
The debate involved the formation of two teams consisting of students from the Al-khwarizmi Engineering College and the Technological University, with eight students in each team. The teams were comprised of students from the Biomedical Engineering, Automation Manufacturing, and Metal Production Engineering departments of both universities. The debate included the formation of an arbitration team from both universities, displaying the questions on the electronic screen, and allocating a suitable time for the students to answer according to the rules set by the supervisory committee prior to the competition.
The aim of the debate, held between students from the Al-khwarizmi Engineering College at the University of Baghdad and the Engineering College at the Technological University, was to enhance the students’ cognitive and scientific skills in their respective fields of study. The Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, delivered a speech emphasizing that the ministry is working to achieve the goals of higher university education and meet the society’s need to prevent the waste of university potentials.
The debate concluded with the victory of the students from the Biomedical Engineering department of the Al-khwarizmi Engineering College, who secured the first place, while the Technological University obtained the second place. The scientific spirit of competition, exchange of information and data among the students of both universities prevailed throughout the debate. The sponsoring and supervisory authorities were honored with shields, and prizes were distributed to the winning teams at the end of the debate. Certificates of appreciation were also awarded to the participants by the preparatory committee.
It is worth mentioning that these scientific debates and cultural activities play an important role in stimulating the imagination of university students and fostering meaningful competition among them, which contributes to further raising the scientific level and showcasing their communicative and cognitive abilities. Additionally, a preliminary debate took place a few days prior at the Technological University with the same participating teams and departments.
