About the Department
The Department of Biochemical Engineering is one of the departments with a very modern specialization in the country, where the department was established within the departments of the Faculty of Al-Khwarizmi Engineering at the University of Baghdad in the academic year (2002-2003) because of its great importance in keeping pace with global industrial development and the country's need for this specialization, which is relatively new even in the developed world. Biochemical engineering is a connecting combination between scientific theories of life sciences, chemistry and physics on the one hand and engineering applications with their concepts and uses on the other hand under the control of computers with the highest possible technology.
A biochemical engineer studies how to take advantage of the interrelationships between microbiology and its external surroundings and transform the laboratory results of these relationships into important industrial processes of economic feasibility. The study in biochemical engineering is based on the science of biotechnologies, which is an applied science based on dealing with probiotic organisms within scientific and engineering principles and according to economic considerations for the development of industrial processes and manufactured products to serve humans.
The effective utilization of physical, chemical and biological processes to transform the raw material into a product that benefits humans in a safe, costly and low-energy consumed manner and with minimal damage to the environment is the basic principle of biochemical engineering, and the design and development tasks of new bioindustrial processes, the production of useful products and the improvement of the efficiency of existing ones are the main key to the effectiveness of the biochemical engineer.
The duration of study in the department is four years where graduates of the preparatory study are accepted with its biological and applied branches and the graduate is awarded a bachelor's degree in biochemical engineering
